Reach new heights in your career with an EWP licence from Major Training. Our EWP (over 11 metres) course allows you to apply for your high-risk work licence with WHS Queensland*.
Once you have your high risk licence, you’ll be allowed to safely and legally operate elevated work platforms across a range of industries.
Located in Queensland, Major Training provides courses across the state in areas such as Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Course Details

An EWP unit of competency is nationally recognised training that will give you the specialist skills needed to safely operate an elevated work platform in a range of trades including building, construction, mining, forestry, demolition, and more.
Your EWP over 11m high risk work licence will enhance your skillset so you can gain employment or start a new career path. You’ll learn the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more.
While training for your EWP licence, you’ll learn how to plan the work, conduct routine checks, and set up, operate, shut down, and secure the elevating work platform.

ENTRY Requirements

  • Pass a language, literacy, and numeracy assessment (LLN)
  • Provide three forms of identification
  • Wear steel-capped or safety boots on site
  • Sun protection is also recommended (hat, long-sleeved shirt, and pants)
  • Minimum 18 years of age (Workplace Health and Safety requirement) – applicable to the full course only
  • You may not be able to attend this course if you are pregnant or have a medical condition – applicable to the full course only

High-risk work Licences

  • High risk work licences have a 5-year life span. After this period, the licence will need to be renewed. This can be done via the WHS Queensland website.
  • If your high risk work licence has expired, you’re not classified as a licenced operator until it’s renewed.
  • You have up to 12 months to renew your high risk licence. If it’s past the 12-month period, you’ll be required to re-sit the written and practical exam.
  • A VOC cannot be done on an expired licence.

How To Apply For a High Risk Work Licence

  • You have 60 days from successfully completing your practical assessment to apply with WorkSafe QLD for your high risk work licence.

Elevating Work Platform (over 11m)

Obtaining an Elevated Work Platform (EWP) licence can pave the way for diverse and dynamic careers focused on performing tasks at elevated heights using specialised equipment and ensuring safety throughout the process. Some of the roles this might include are as follows.

Possible Roles

Construction Worker: Operate an EWP to perform tasks such as window installation, facade maintenance, and roof repairs on construction sites, ensuring safe and efficient access to elevated areas.

Tree Care Specialist: Operate an EWP to reach and prune trees, perform tree removals, or install tree lighting. This role is common in landscaping, arboriculture, and municipal services.

Event Crew Member: Deploy and operate EWPs for setting up stages, lighting, banners, and decorations at events and festivals. This role ensures that event spaces are transformed safely and efficiently.

Maintenance Technician: Use an EWP to access and maintain equipment, machinery, or infrastructure in industrial settings, ensuring that inspections, repairs, and routine maintenance are conducted safely and effectively.

Telecommunications Technician: Utilise an EWP to install, repair, or maintain telecommunication equipment on utility poles or transmission towers. This role is essential for maintaining communication networks.

Film and Television Production Crew: Use an EWP to position cameras, lighting, and equipment for film and TV shoots, allowing for unique and dynamic camera angles in productions.

Potential wages could be in the region of $75,000 to $85,000 per year or around $40 per hour

Full EWP Training & Assessment Course

Duration: 3 days

Time: 6.30am to 3pm

Suitable for: This course is the perfect choice if you don’t yet have formal experience in EWP and are looking at gaining employment or starting a new career. This course will teach you everything you need to know from start to finish and is delivered in person over 3 days by our knowledgeable team.

  • A competency-based training program delivered by our knowledgeable team over 3 days.
  • Both the formal and informal requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training’s simulated worksites throughout Queensland.
  • Training materials include a logbook, training plan, full assessment, and training manual.

Formal EWP Assessment & Training Course

Duration: One day of formal training, up to 6 months logbook on the job and one day of assessment

Suitable for: Suitable for existing workers requiring a SOA / EWP Licence to enter the workforce and that can complete the mandatory informal training on the job at their current employment

  • Employer involvement and licenced operator required to supervise
  • All requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training Group’s high quality simulated worksites throughout QLD and your employers workplace
  • Informal training – Up to 40 hours supervised log book training is completed on the job in the workplace
  • Formal training is completed at a Major Training site
  • EWP formal training is on the first day of the course with assessment once the logbook is completed
  • Employers must agree and fill in all relevant areas of the students logbook
  • Students must log hours and detail of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
  • Student log book must be signed off by employer or employer’s representative with the relevant OHS licence
  • A completed log book with an employer’s letter validating the log is required
  • Students have for up to 6 months to complete

Experienced Operators Course

Duration: 2 days

Suitable for: Operators with demonstrated previous experience. Applicants are required to provide evidence of prior experience for enrolment in this course, which may include an expired licence. This can be a more economical option for already skilled people.

  • For experienced and competent operators on completion of formal training
  • Students must log hours and details of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
  • Student logbook must be signed off by employer with the relevant WHS licence
  • A final skills assessment is conducted when the employer is happy with the skill and knowledge level of the student
  • Assessment includes a closed book theory test and a comprehensive practical test

Smaller classes better and more knowledgeable teachers who care about the students and more flexible learning (being able to do most of the work from home). TAFE felt like it was just there to keep apprentices there for as long as possible (spending 8 hours to do 2 hours of work) but here it’s all based around the student, come in for the morning to to finish up units then go back to work for the rest of the day.
