After successfully completing our HR licence training, you will obtain the necessary license to operate a heavy rigid vehicle weighing 8 tonnes GVM or more, equipped with 3 or more axles. This includes trucks and buses, ensuring safe operation.

HR training empowers you to operate a wide range of heavy rigid vehicles, including trucks and buses, over 8 tonnes GVM. Choose from a range of gearbox options to find the perfect fit for your desired career path:
- Rad Ranger (Open Class) – this gearbox is standard on US and large Japanese trucks
- Synchromesh (Condition B) – this gearbox is standard on most European heavy trucks
- Automatic (Condition B) – this gearbox is increasingly popular in mine site equipment, some buses and refuse trucks.
But the benefits don’t stop there! Having an HR license makes upgrading to HC or MC licenses in the future a breeze. This opens doors to even more lucrative positions in the heavy vehicle transport industry.

Upon successful completion, you’ll earn your Heavy Rigid Licence (HR license) to operate a wide range of heavy rigid vehicles exceeding 8 tonnes GVM, equipped with 3 or more axles. This encompasses both trucks and buses, ensuring you graduate confident in the safe operation of these powerful machines.

ENTRY Requirements
To apply for a heavy rigid licence, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must hold your current licence for a set period (usually 2 years), and this period must have occurred in the last 5 years. This period can be continuous or made up of different individual lengths of time (excluding any time that your licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired).
- An open or provisional class C licence held for 24 months or an open or provisional light rigid (LR) or medium rigid (MR) licence held continuously for at least 12 months.
- Pay the test booking fee to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
- Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge test.
Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test
- Before beginning your medium rigid licence training with us, you must have completed a written heavy vehicle knowledge test taken at a Department of Transport and Main Roads service centre (click here for locations).
- There are ten questions in the test, and you need eight out of ten correct answers to gain your heavy vehicle learner’s licence.

Awesome!! After coming from TAFE the training is so much better. Smaller classes better and more knowledgeable teachers who care about the students and more flexible learning (being able to do most of the work from home). TAFE felt like it was just there to keep apprentices there for as long as possible (spending 8 hours to do 2 hours of work) but here it’s all based around the student, come in for the morning to to finish up units then go back to work for the rest of the day.
