Why You Need A Unique Student Identifier (USI)

What is a USI?

And how does it work?

All students undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia need to have a Unique Student Identifier.

A USI is like an account number made up of letters and numbers. It will give you direct access to your USI Account.

Your USI account will enable access to your training records and results through your computer, tablet, or even smartphone, anywhere, anytime.

You’ll also be able to see, send or print out your training records when applying for a job or further training.

You only need one USI number for all your training and it’s yours for life!

You can create your own Unique Student Identifier (USI) OR you can give permission to your Training Organisation to view your USI Transcript. Learn how to give permission to you Training Organisation here.

How to create a USI

Creating a Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a simple and essential process. Follow these three steps to create your own USI:

  1. Gather Identification Documents: Collect official identification documents, such as a driver's license, passport, Medicare card, or birth certificate. Make sure the documents are current and match your personal details.
  2. Visit the USI Website: Access the official USI website (usi.gov.au) and navigate to the "Create a USI" section. Provide your personal information, including full name, date of birth, and contact details. Ensure accuracy to avoid issues later.
  3. Verify and Record: Complete the required information and verify your identity using the identification documents you gathered earlier. Once verified, your USI will be generated. Keep this number safe and record it for future reference.

Creating a USI is an essential step for accessing and managing your vocational education and training records. It's a quick process that ensures your training achievements are accurately recorded and easily accessible throughout your career journey.
