How to Become an Engineer

Engineers are highly regarded professionals in Australia and worldwide. Responsible for making the world a safer and more efficient place, they play an integral role in advancing living standards. If you’re interested in learning how to become an engineer – whether electrical, civil, mechanical or chartered – discover the necessary education, requirements and steps to kickstart your career.

Depending on the type of engineer you want to become, there are many pathways to getting qualified.

Choose a Specialisation

There are several types of engineers, with each specialisation offering distinct career opportunities. Although many engineering skills are transferrable between disciplines, choosing a specialisation early in your studies will help you get qualified sooner.

To help you find the right pathway to becoming an engineer, we’ve broken down the qualification process for each specialisation.

How to Become an Electrical Engineer

Electrical engineers design and develop electrical systems, using the physics and mathematics of electricity, electromagnetism and electronics to process information. To become an electrical engineer, you’ll need to complete a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in electrical engineering. To improve your chances of finding employment and being considered for managerial roles, electrical engineers may undertake a Master of Electrical Engineering. To work independently as an electrical engineer, you’ll also need to earn an engineer’s licence. This is typically awarded after 4 years of supervised experience.

How to Become a Civil Engineer

Civil engineers are responsible for the planning, design and execution of infrastructure projects. To specialise in this profession, you’ll need to complete a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in civil engineering. You can also go on to complete a Master of Civil Engineering to equip yourself with the skills and knowledge required for managerial roles.

It’s possible to apply for a civil engineering licence after 4 years of supervised practice in the workplace.

How to Become a Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineering is primarily focused on the design and construction of energy-consuming machines. They also specialise in processing materials and improving the efficiency of systems. Mechanical engineers are generally required to complete a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in mechanical engineering.

Completing a Master of Mechanical Engineering can help advance your career in this field. Most states and territories in Australia require mechanical engineers to complete at least 4 years of supervised practice before applying for a professional engineer’s licence.

How to Become a Chartered Engineer

Chartered engineers are characterised by their ability to develop solutions for common engineering problems. They use existing and emerging technologies to enhance systems and processes, paving the way for new engineering technologies.

Becoming a chartered engineer involves proving and maintaining competency in several areas. Most chartered engineers have several years’ experience in leadership roles and a postgraduate qualification. To achieve chartered status in Australia, you’ll be required to undertake an assessment and registration process with Engineers Australia.

If you want to get qualified by undertaking an apprenticeship with an experienced RTO, there are many pathways for aspiring engineers to choose from. Learn more about Major Training’s engineering courses today.
