How to Bounce Back After Losing Your Job

As thousands of businesses struggle to recover from the economic impact of COVID-19, many people are facing unemployment. Losing your job can be daunting, but it’s also a chance to embrace new opportunities and career pathways.

Not sure what to do if you get made redundant? If you’ve suddenly found yourself without a source of income, join us as we look at how to bounce back after losing your job.

Focus On Your Mental Health

Losing your job can be a shock that may leave you feeling depressed or anxious. Along with updating your resume and LinkedIn profile, looking after your mental health should be one of your top priorities.

Here are some tips to help you stay in healthy headspace in the immediate aftermath of a job loss:

  • Keep busy – In between applying for new roles, you’re sure to find yourself with lots of spare time. Rather than dwelling on your redundancy or worrying about what might happen in the future, make the most of unemployment by taking up a new hobby.
  • Stay connected – Big events may be off the cards for a while thanks to the pandemic, but you can still catch up with friends (in small numbers). Even if lockdown restrictions are in place where you live, chatting to a friend or family member over the phone can brighten your day.
  • Stick to a routine – Watching Netflix until 2.00am may be tempting but try and stick to a routine. This will make it easier to snap back into a regular schedule once you find a new job.

No matter how eager you are to get back into the workforce, taking the time to look after your mental health will help you get back on your feet.

Embrace Change

Losing your job may seem like a catastrophe at first, but it can also motivate you to look for new career opportunities. You might not realise it but being made redundant could be the push you need to expand your horizons, change industries, or apply for higher up roles.

If you’re worried you may not have the right skills or knowledge to transition into a new job, or a totally different industry, earning a qualification could help you get where you want to be. Regardless of the field you want to work in, being able to demonstrate a wide range of skills will enhance your employability.

From short courses designed to expand your practical skillset to certificates needed for managerial jobs, any kind of qualification will make your resume more impressive.

Be Patient When Job Hunting

Just because you’re unemployed doesn’t mean you have to settle for something that doesn’t suit your ambitions. Give it time and the right job will come along eventually. Just make sure you read every role description thoroughly to avoid applying for unsuitable opportunities.
