Legislation Changes: Licensing Requirements for Specially Constructed Vehicles

Did you know that the Class UD licence as of 1 Jan 2016 is now no longer valid?

From the 1 January 2014 specially constructed vehicles may be driven under the authority of a class C provisional, probationary or open licence. A class UD licence will no longer be required to drive these vehicles.

What if you need to drive a mobile crane over 4.5t GVM?

Mobile cranes over 4.5t GVM cannot be driven on a class C licence. To drive a mobile crane over 4.5t GVM, you will need to hold the appropriate class of heavy vehicle licence.

For example, to drive a 2 axle mobile crane that is over 4.5t GVM, you will need to hold a class MR licence, or to drive a 3 axle mobile crane that is over 4.5t GVM, you need to hold a class HR licence.

If you hold a class UD licence, you can drive a mobile crane over 4.5t GVM, providing it does not have a chassis substantially like a truck, on your class UD licence for the two-year transitional period.

However, from 1 January 2016, the class UD licence will not authorise you to drive any mobile crane, you will need to hold the appropriate class of heavy vehicle licence.  Note: These changes only relate to driver licensing requirements for driving specially constructed vehicles on a road. Any workplace health and safety, industry training or other qualifications required to operate specially constructed vehicles still apply.
