The Benefits of Doing a Mature-Aged Apprenticeship

If you’re thinking of changing careers, a mature-aged apprenticeship can equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge. Also known as adult apprenticeships, mature-aged apprenticeships provide training opportunities to people over the age of 21. Offering similar training requirements and conditions, they’re almost identical to standard apprenticeships but have some differences relating to financial incentives.

If you’re not sure whether to do a mature-aged apprenticeship, this article covers some of the benefits you’ll enjoy and how to get an apprenticeship.

Strong Job Prospects

Mature-aged apprentices can offer life experience and are therefore better equipped to handle the pressures of a full-time job. Despite requiring higher wages than apprentices aged under 21, they’re in high demand among employers.

Due to their maturity, adult apprentices often need less supervision and tend to be better at following instructions. They’re also more likely to finish their apprenticeship, giving employers a greater chance of getting return on their investment.

As many employers recognise the value in hiring people with maturity and life experience, adult workers may have an advantage when applying for jobs.

Higher Wages

Under Australian law, adult apprentices are entitled to higher wages than their younger counterparts. Special wage rates apply to all apprentices and your employer must provide you with a formal training contract for you to be paid at apprentice rates.

Wages can vary depending on the state or territory you live in and the kind of trade you’re doing. Although starting wages for adult apprentices are quite low at first, they’ll significantly increase year by year. Once you’re qualified, you should have great earning potential.

Retraining Opportunities

Doing a mature-aged apprenticeship is a great way to make a fresh start. If you’re unsatisfied in your current career or looking to get back into the workforce, this kind of training arrangement could provide a pathway to your dream job.

From construction to hair dressing, there are a range of industries to choose from. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to retrain and change the course of your career.

Who can do a mature-aged apprenticeship?

To be eligible for a mature-aged apprenticeship, you must be aged 21 years or older and have the right to work in Australia. Some apprenticeships also require you to have completed a minimum level of high school education or other prerequisites.
