Types of Short Courses

If you’re after a dynamic career change in a short amount of time, or just want to upskill and improve your employment chances, short courses are a great way to do this. They’re also a good way to connect with people in the industry, giving you an even better chance at employment in your chosen field in the future.

Major Training’s upskilling courses are perfect for those seeking a leg up in the industry, with a major focus on mining, construction and transport while also providing short courses in first aid, working at heights, and more.

Mining Short Courses

Mining has always been a large part of the Australian economy, accounting for around 10% of total GDP in 2020. It’s also one of Australia’s most well-established sectors with a constant need for workers, meaning that demand is always there for well-trained individuals.

Major Training’s mining courses can be completed in anywhere from 2 days to 48 months, depending on if it’s a qualification or short course. Each has been designed to give you the skills needed for a range of jobs in the mining industry, such as machinery operator or driver. You can even take an upskilling course to become a mining site supervisor.

RII20115 Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation is a pathway qualification for those who want to get started in the resource industry. Able to be completed in a face to face environment over 8 weeks, participants of this mining qualification will learn the basics of health and safety, risk management, communication, planning and preparing to undertake a task, hand and power tool operation, and measurements and calculations.

Another mining-related short course is the Standard 11 program, the most universally accepted induction program in Australian mining. This course will grant you with a general mining overview whilst also introducing numerous components of the mining industry including legislation, general safety, traffic and mobile equipment procedures, risk management, and life-saving first aid.

Construction Short Courses

As our population continues to grow, so too does our need for vital infrastructure – and of course, the country needs skilled construction workers to make it happen. To get inducted into the industry, you can take a short course to gain your white card – from there, you can look into an upskilling course such as  Certificate I in Construction, CPC30318 Certificate III in Concreting,  CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry, or  CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Some of these courses can be completed in as little as 12 months, meaning you can start working sooner.

Another construction short course that we recommend is the working at heights course, which prepares you for any jobsite in the building, construction, and mining industries. Major Training delivers this course to the highest Australian standards, and covers risk assessment and hazard elimination, fall restraint systems, selection of equipment and its correct use, the correct use of ladders and ladder safety training and more.

Transport Short Courses

Truck drivers are the lifeblood of Australian industry, delivering everything from food to construction equipment and beyond – so if you are interested in driving the country’s future, why not consider getting your heavy vehicle license? We can tell you the best process to progress from a class C licence through to a Medium Rigid (MR)Heavy Rigid (HR), Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) licence. Our short courses in heavy vehicle training will help you get on the road sooner.

Alternatively, you can approach transport from another avenue. TLI30319 Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations will get you involved in logistics and supply chain processes after a brief six weeks of study before you will have the skills to gain employment.
