Plant Operator Responsibilities

Tasked with the operation, supervision and maintenance of heavy machinery, plant operators have a wide range of responsibilities.

These are some of the day-to-day duties you may have as a plant operator:

  • Preparing machinery
  • Repairing broken down equipment
  • Undertaking risk assessments
  • Monitoring the performance of machinery
  • Transporting machinery around building sites
  • Training team members in the safe operation of heavy-duty machinery.

If you think you can handle these responsibilities, a career in plant operation could be an ideal fit. For more information on the responsibilities of a plant operator, checkout our article What Does a Plant Operator Do?

Get Qualified

You don’t necessarily need to complete a training course to work in plant operation jobs. However, having a qualification will help you find work more easily by providing formal acknowledgment of your skills and knowledge.

To start your plant operator training, earning a Certificate III in Civil Constructions Plant Operations will give you a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills. Once you’ve got a Certificate III under your belt, you could complete additional training to get licenced for operating machines likes backhoes, skid steers, rollers, and graders.

Different types of plant machinery have specific operator requirements, so you’ll need to complete a short course for each machine you want to operate. Working with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) will simplify the process of getting qualified. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in plant operation or want to learn more about the various types of plant operators, don’t forget to explore our article: Types of Plant Operators: How to Become Qualified.

Major Training’s Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations will provide you with the skills needed to work in the plant operation industry. We also offer plant machinery licence training and a refresher plant operations course for experienced operators.

Choose a Specialisation

Dozer

One of the best things about the civil construction plant operations industry is how broad it is. You’ll have a variety of specialisations to choose from, ranging from earthmoving operations to manufacturing processes. If you have an interest in heavy machinery, you may excel at operating the kind of equipment routinely used on infrastructure projects, such as excavators, front end loaders, and dozers.

For those who enjoy being outdoors, learning how to use earthmoving machinery will help you find employment in your ideal work environment. Many plant operator skills are transferable between different industries, giving qualified operators plenty of choice when it comes to finding a job.

Regardless of which area you decide to specialise in, the more plant machinery licences you earn, the more opportunities you’ll have to choose from. For information about enrolling in Major Training’s Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations, please get in touch with us today.
