Truck

Looking to have a career in transportation? Truck drivers are in high demand in Australia as road freight increases in importance and current drivers head into retirement. The trucking industry is an exciting field to work in that involves so much more than simply driving a heavy vehicle.

As a truck driver, you are responsible for the transport of goods and cargo between locations and liaising with dispatching companies to receive consignments. If you enjoy practical work, have a mechanical aptitude and the ability to drive safely, you should consider getting your heavy vehicle licence.

Discover everything you need to know on how to become a truck driver in Australia.

Get Your Heavy Vehicle Licence

If you plan on driving trucks across the country, the first thing you’ll need to obtain is your heavy vehicle licence. There are five different categories of licence to choose from:

  • LR: Light rigid
  • MR: Medium rigid
  • HR: Heavy rigid
  • HC: Heavy combination
  • MC: Multi combination.

Each licence type will allow you to legally drive and control a variety of vehicles used in the transport industry and directly correlate to your employability. For example, a heavy rigid licence will allow you to operate a bus or vehicle with over eight tonne Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) with three or more axles. You will need to hold your class C (car) licence for at least one year before you can apply for an LR or MR licence and at least two years before going for a HR licence.

Go for your heavy vehicle licence with Major Training in QLD. You can complete our licence courses either through lessons by the hour or one to three-day courses, depending on the licence category.

Finding a Job

Once you’ve obtained your licence and undergone heavy vehicle training, you will need to consider what area of the industry you want to work in. Are you interested in working for a moving company or couriers? Long haul or short haul? Once you’ve decided, you can start the job search. It’s a smart move to reach out to companies directly as some will choose to take on newly qualified drivers and train them on the job.
